Emily Pryce-Boese

Before moving to the UK, I completed a degree in communication studies & philosophy in Canada. The gym was a place to go when I needed a break and it was in university that I began to associate exercise with fun and freedom. After graduating I applied for a job as a personal trainer in a corporate gym. It was there I realised how much I enjoyed working with people. After discovering CrossFit, I quickly switched and became a coach as well as communications manager for the CrossFit gym. I worked primarily with Masters (50+), those new to CrossFit, and women new to fitness.

Once I met my husband, I made a snap decision to move to the U.K. I now live and work on a sheep and dairy farm. I love having the opportunity to coach CrossFit and the way it balances and compliments life on the farm.

Though I enjoy a heavy barbell, it’s really all about the mental push. I love being in that dark space where it is mind over matter, nothing exists beyond the immediate, and you have to push through the physical. I can feel myself approaching a line and it’s all about keeping control and continuing to move when I want nothing more than to lie down and cry.

I had been a fairly regimented bodybuilder and powerlifter for years before I decided to try CrossFit. I had my prejudices against the sport, and when I came across a six-week intro course hosted by a local gym in Canada, I figured I would sign up and spend six weeks learning how stupid CrossFit was.

At the end of the six weeks I quit my job as a personal trainer and accepted a position coaching at that same CrossFit gym. I coached everything from kids to general classes to the masters in Canada before moving overseas.

I love giving people the space and opportunities to explore their potential. CrossFit has given me so much confidence in my body’s ability to move and perform as an athlete. It’s important that I create those same opportunities for discovery amongst those I coach. There is no high like being there when someone accomplishes what they thought beyond the realm of possibility.
